Israel Houghton is inarguably one of the most influential people in gospel music worldwide. Ministering through his solo album projects, at Lakewood Church and with New Breed, he has touched millions with powerful songs of inspiration that cross denominational, language, and even secular barriers.

Israel's newest offering, The Power of One, is no exception. Evoking powerful gospel and funk elements, Israel is able to stir up courage and blessed-assurance in the powerful proclamation that we are all loved by an ever-present God. 13 original songs weave a gospel flair in with ethnic vibes and at times, modern rock guitar -- but at no time does he divert from the true message - that the Power of One is not the power of ourselves; but it's the power of THE One.

The album is masterfully executed with the smack-you-in-the-face opener 'Everywhere That I Go.' Funk drums and bass will captivate the listener right away - and to be honest, I couldn't help but smile and bob my head in time! Producers Tommy Sims and Aaron Lindsey have created a musically complex and vocally impressive mix; it is never boring and at no time does it go over the top - but always leaves you right at the edge of your seat.

The first 5 tracks waste no time - launching into song after song which feels more like a live worship gathering than an album opener. Israel gives a commanding vocal performance on the album's title track soaring to majestic high notes declaring "To the children of the world... it all begins with ONE." In fact, my sole criticism is that it takes 1:10 to get into this song... but when it gets there - boy does it get there.

The latter half of the album is ripe with duets and cowrites, not the least of which is 'Every Prayer', featuring the powerhouse duo Mary Mary. The writing is so deep and striking in this song - with female vocals loudly testifying to us "don't despise the tears you've cried or the prayers you've prayed - Heaven heard your every word and the answer's on the way."

If you have to hear just one track this album I encourage you to fire up the disc to the very last track. Just over 10 minutes long, this medley of modern worship choruses weaves in between Andrae Crouch's 'Bless His Holy Name' so well that it almost seems that these songs were always meant to be together. Frankly, it feels more like a jam session than it does an album track! The flow is so organic that it is hard to believe it was scripted or planned in any way.

In a CCM market that is filled with more and more of the same guitar-driven, rock-oriented music Israel Houghton breathes a breath of fresh air with a culturally relevant work of art that will appeal to all ages and people in all seasons of life.
